While The Social Reckoning (🌟🌟🌟) is a good film worthy of being seen in a theater, this movie reaffirms my strong beliefs about Aaron Sorkin: Sorkin is like a great offensive coordinator who’s mastered the art of play-calling but who’s a below-average head coach. Sorkin is a lieutenant - he’s not a general. Asking Sorkin to both write & direct a film, which he does here, is stretching him too thin. At day’s end, this film has its moments, most of which are driven by Academy Award winner Mikey Madison’s brilliance, but The Social Reckoning pales in comparison to The Social Network, and a big reason for that is because Sorkin is given too much responsibility.
I love Aaron Sorkin. I’m also a self-proclaimed Aaron Sorkin expert. As an aspiring writer, I’ve watched The West Wing from start to finish more than I care to admit. The American President is one of my go-to films when I’m in a negative place. From A Few Good Men to Charlie Wilson’s War, I love the sharp, snarky, snappy Sorkin dialogue. So when I lay criticism at Sorkin’s feet, it goes against every natural instinct in my body. I think Sorkin is as gifted of a screen writer as anyone I’ve ever seen. But it does not mean he always makes contact when he’s at the plate.
Sorkin’s thesis with The Social Reckoning is as follows: Facebook deserves blame for radicalizing the United States. Everything in this film works backwards from that statement. Madison plays former Facebook employee Frances Haugen who confides in journalist Jeff Horowitz about the unethical practices of Facebook. The crux of the story here is we meet Haugen & Facebook at an inflection point. It’s 2019 & the site’s numbers are going down so Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong) decides to change the algorithm. The idea, however, is that Facebook pretends like the algorithm is designed to do good, when, in fact, they know it’s designed to radicalize. Thus begins a key period of whistleblowing between 2019 & 2021, as this film jumps in time between these two moments.
Sorkin’s screenplay is sharp, engaging & entertaining. If you love Sorkin’s writing like I do, you’re going to enjoy this film. But with that said, there are a number of issues I have with this movie. First, and this speaks to the fact that Sorkin is asked to do too much as the director, is the film’s editing. Editing, which is the way a story is told, can make or break a film. The Social Network had some of the best editing I’ve ever seen & flipped through multiple timelines seamlessly. This film fails where The Social Network succeeds. The little timeline Sorkin gives us felt totally unnecessary & I felt like going back and forth between Zuckerberg’s congressional prep vs. Haugen’s whistleblowing took so much energy out of the film.
Beyond issues with the editing is the actual story itself - which is perhaps the biggest issue of all. I guess it sort of confuses me what Sorkin is trying to say here that we as a society don’t already know: we know Facebook warps its algorithm for more engagement, we know we can’t trust these websites or individuals like Zuckerberg. So what’s the entire point of this story? Even Haugen’s morality in all of this seems a little iffy when she’s constantly repeating that she loves Facebook, believes in Facebook, and isn’t on the same “team” as Horowitz. All of which is without mentioning the fact that Sorkin sort of paints Zuckerberg as a victim of circumstance who - eventually - “takes down” a video of Donald Trump inciting an insurrection. All of which adds up to a story that feels…hollow. Unnecessary. Borderline sanctimonious…

It's an investigative journalism movie about a story we already know, so the challenge is in making something familiar feel urgent. The Social Reckoning does that by showing the dangers of Facebook as a social media platform and https://t.co/xN8PwRzM7K

Nowhere near as good as the OG Movie but this is a good one to kill a night at home watching. The journalistic point of view of the film felt complete and fair.
